About this work
Three separate ovals of flesh, each cropped tightly around a single human eye, float and overlap against a solid black ground; the eyes look in different directions, rendered in hazel, blue-grey and green, surrounded only by lids, lashes and creased skin with no other facial features shown.
Warm ochre and burnt-sienna tones are built up with thick, ridged brushstrokes that model each lid and socket almost sculpturally, while the flat black background isolates the fragments in space. The heavy impasto and repeated, cropped framing give the study a watchful, unsettling intensity.
